Hi Everyone, my name is Sam Tisdale! Let me tell you a story.

In the fall of 2016, I attended a bachelor party in celebration of my friend’s upcoming wedding. After a delightful brunch at Oddfellow’s Cafe on Capitol Hill, the lot of us walked over to an unusual business called only…Puzzle Break. Once there, we were informed that we would be locked in a room for an hour and would have to solve puzzles and brain teasers in order to escape from The Midnight Carnival. Oooooh….spooky!

Of course, I had never heard of anything so ridiculous in my entire life. Locked in a room? And we have to solve riddles and puzzles in order to find a way out? Come on. There is no way that anyone could ever find such a horrible idea enjoyable, much less actually spend their hard-earned dollars on such an ordeal. 

I emerged from the room an hour later, transformed. The experience was absolutely mesmerizing. Furthermore, a single thought kept creeping into my brain over the course of the following days:

I’ll bet that I can create something just as special.

So I did. A month later, The Madness From the Sea was born. And to this day, the obsession with telling stories through puzzles and games continues.

Description
The Rebirth of Optimus Prime is a short film that served as the final project for my undergraduate computer graphics class at UW.

While not quite up to the level of your average Pixar film, there is still quite a lot going on here, including the use of hierarchical models, matrix transformations (ha!), lighting/particle effects, and custom shaders.

My co-creator Nick Shahan and I are both huge fans of the first generation of Transformers, and we hope you'll find this to be a fitting tribute!

The Madness From The Sea

Description
In the fall of 2016, I decided to convert my two-bedroom apartment into a live-action escape room. Thus, The Madness From the Sea was born.

Loosely based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft, teams had to test their wits against fifteen challenging puzzles to prevent Cthulhu from rising out of the ocean and destroying humanity.

I had originally intended to run Madness a handful of times - only for my close friends and their guests. Six months later, I was running ten to twelve groups each weekend, and trying not to fall asleep at my desk on Monday morning.

Looking back, I beam with pride when I think about this project. It is the sort of endeavour that only comes to fruition at the crossroads of passion, sweat -- and yes, even a little madness.

Description
She Saves The Day is my first foray into classic pen-and-paper puzzle design, but with some unique twists. It is a solve-anywhere puzzle and trivia hunt designed for solo solvers or for teams of up to 12 players.

Players follow the adventures of a wide array of heroines from popular culture in an attempt to thwart the forces of darkness.

In addition to pen-and-paper materials, She Saves The Day also includes larger physical objects such as wooden blocks, star charts, and locked containers. It also leverages the popular Cluekeeper app to help players track their progress.
